Focus of Instructional Practices

All faculty and staff of SAU 67 seek to use best teaching practices.  Identifying these practices seems as easy as a Google search.  While a very large list of best teaching practices can be created our focus will be on identifying those practices that provide the most potential in improving student learning.  The work of John Hattie has helped to provide research that takes a very large list of best teaching practices and helps us understand that while many positively impact student learning, some rise to the top of the list as having a significant impact.  Hover over photos to link to presentations.  The development of this page is ongoing.  The resources are designed to be used by individuals and groups for professional development.

Overview Best Practices
EduSrum

This presentation provides an overview of Best Instructional Practices.  It makes the case that while there are many practices that have been identified as "best," that in fact some practices are better than others or provide more "bang for the buck."  It starts with a model, using popovers, to illustrate this point.  The presentation also explains how values were assigned to determine the impact of practices on learning, ending with actual classroom best practices examples.

This LibGuide focuses on a classroom management tool for projects.  EduScrum helps teach students executive functioning skills.  The tool puts the student at the center of their learning and helps the educator structure this into the project.  This is best used for projects that last 2 to 3 weeks.    GRADE 3 and UP

Development

This LibGuide toolbox presents several teacher centered techniques.  The majority of these come from "Teach Like A Champion."  What's different about the way they are presented is the techniques are viewed through the filter of the learning pathway.  Some of these techniques should be used in the early stages and some of these techniques should be used as students approach mastery.  These techniques foster Grit and positive reinforcement.  They also help with student engagement.  ALL GRADES

This LibGuide provides a video that walks the reader through the philosophy of building rubrics.  It provides an evolution of rubrics over time starting in 2005 and moving to the most current view.  The presentation also makes connections to our "Mother of All Rubrics," and our Learning Pyramid.  The site provides rubric examples from across grades and curriculum areas.  It also provides a like to a "bucket of rubric," resources.

Performance     Task

This LibGuide presents a toolbox for developing Performance Task.  The video introduces the four principles of thought used to design a performance assessment and explains the four different types of performance tasks.  It provides guidance on how to choose which performance task is right for your curriculum and your number of contact days with students.  The tabs located at the top of the boxes provide samples of each of the four performance tasks.  This LibGuide will be dynamic with material being added in an ongoing manner.
